Margaret Ann Kernan was born on September 20, 1936, the daughter of Theodore Alexander Lapham (1910-1955) and Alice Lucretia Wellin (1916-1985), in Portland, Oregon. After her parents' divorce, she and her sisters were raised by her mother's second husband, Willard Pershing Graber (1918-1989).

On June 28, 1952, Margaret married William George Kernan (1933-), the son of Delmar Clair Kernan (1908-1979) and Maxine Elizabeth Davis (1912-1992), at St. Peter Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon. Margaret and William had five children between 1953 and 1957: Patrick Joseph Kernan (1953-1992), Vicki Rae Kernan, Richard Allen Kernan (1955-1999), William Clare Kernan, and Terry Lee Kernan.

In about 1961, Margaret and her family moved to Huntington Beach, California. There, she attended some college courses and became a bookkeeper, later working for the Southwestern artist Jack Black. In about 1989, Margaret and William moved to Tucson, Arizona. Margaret was a talented drawer and painter. She passed away on March 3, 2004 from cancer in Tucson, Pima, Arizona. She was buried on March 8, 2004 at Evergreen Cemetery.

Margaret was proceeded in death by two sons (Patrick Kernan and Richard Kernan), her parents (Alice and Theodore Lapham) and step-father (Willard Graber); her half-sister (Sharolyn Rush), a half-brother (Roger Graber-Hayes), and a nephew (Steven Anderson). She was survived by her husband (Bill Kernan), three children (Vicki Bradford, William Kernan, and Terry Kernan) and their families, two sisters (Gloria Graber and Jacque Shindler), a half-sister (Marla Porter-York), and several nices and nephews.
