Tuskegee Airman. An original Tuskegee Airman and member of the Atlanta Chapter Tuskegee Airman Inc. He was affectionately known as Rudy by his family. He joined the prestigious Tuskegee Airmen in 1942, at the tender age of 18. He eventually received an assignment to the 477th Medium Bomber Unit which was the first black bomber unit in the United States Air Force. On May 14, 2006 Berthoud received an honorary doctorate from Tuskegee University in honor of the legacy of his service and achievements.
