A World War I veteran, John Dardis Donnelly was born June 9, 1890 in Canastota, Madison County, New York, the fourth-born child and first-born son of Thomas John Donnelly and Nora Heffernan Donnelly. He had six siblings. John was named for his father's foster father and uncle, John Dardis, Jr. He had blue eyes and light brown hair. John moved to Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York in 1910. He served during World War I in the U. S. Army from April 4, 1918 till June 7, 1919 when he was honorably discharged.

John married Catherine Marie Costigan, on May 5, 1918, and they had four children: John Edward "Jack" Donnelly, William James Donnelly, Arlene M. Donnelly Rahrle, and Thomas R. Donnelly.



A well known Syracuse musician, John played drums in orchestras at the Strand and Temple theaters and at the opening of the Keith Theater. John also played with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra as a tympanist. He was a member of the Syracuse Musicians Union, a veteran of World War I, and a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. He died at age 67 at the Veterans' Hospital in Syracuse, and is buried in Saint Agnes Cemetery in Syracuse, New York.
