My grandfather, Raphael, preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Leona Sidell, was survived by 10 of his 13 children and many grandchildren. He was very much the patriarch of his family. I spent several weeks with him and my grandmother and my Aunt Matilda during summer vacations. I remember milking his cows, helping him mend fences, and playing Chinese Checkers with him.

My grandparents lived on a tobacco farm. On this farm in addition to their house were two tenant houses, one of them built mostly, if not entirely of logs. It was in this "log cabin" that I was born and spent the first year and half of my life.

My grandad did not live very long after his wife's death. His body was reposed in his house and I was one of those selected to stay up all night at the wake. Another attendee at the wake was a cousin, Alma Pearl Gay, who regaled us with fabulous ghost stories. My granfather's death was truly a milestone in the Todd family ancestry.

This biography was written by his grandson, Thomas E. Todd. This information was entered by his great grandson, Bryan G. Todd.
