John Alfred Bishop was born on 11 Dec 1896 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. The first son of Edward Stokes Bishop and Lula Bruce (Elder) Bishop. John was named for his grandfather, John Anthony Bishop, and great-grandfather,Alfred Bishop (both Civil War Veterans).

He married Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Williams. She was the daughter of William Ambler Williams and Sarah E (Vaughan) Williams.
John farmed in Dinwiddie all his life.

Molly and John had the following children: John Gordon, William Garland, George Willis, Maxine, Mary, Norman Roland, Carl Wayne, and Nora Mayes Bishop (twin of Norman, died as an infant).
After Molly died of tuberculosis in 1934, John married second to Cecilia French Maitland. They had one child: Shirley.

When Fort Picket was expanding its boundaries, John and his family were forced to relocate to another farm in Dinwiddie County. While walking the mules to the new farm, a truck ran off the road and struck John.

His parents tried everything they could to save their son, and hired nurses to care for him 24 hours a day. Despite all their efforts, John died in the hospital after several days, on 14 Jan 1941. He left behind many relatives to mourn his loss, and his death took a heavy toll on his father, who died two months later.
