1LT David Brian Dann, Vietnam Veteran, native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
First Lieut. Dann was a casualty of the Vietnam War. His tour of duty began on 10 October, 1966 with the 28th Infantry Black Lions (1LT/02 Co C 1/28 ). He served our country until 8 November, 1966 in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam when he was killed by hostile, small arms fire. The Silver Star citation states that throughout many close combat enemy attacks against numerically superior hostile forces and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he unhesitatingly remained in an exposed position from which he could control his troops and direct their fire. He was mortally wounded in one of those attacks.
His body was recovered. 1LT Dann is on panel 12E, line 41 of the Vietnam Memorial.
He was awarded The Silver Star Medal for Valor, The Combat Infantryman's Badge (CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his Combat Related Wounds, The National Defense Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star, The Army Paratrooper Jump Wings, The Meritorious Unit Citation, The Expert Rifle and Pistol Medal and The Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation.

He went on to become a City of Milwaukee Police Officer on February 25, 1963 before joining the US Army. Lt. Dann took leave of the police force on May 14, 1964 to enlist in the Army and won an outstanding training award in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO in August, 1964. He completed military police school at Fort Gordon, GA in November 1964. In October, 1965, he was distinguished graduate No. 3 of his class at officers' candidate school, Fort Benning, GA, where he was commissioned a second lieutenant.
He was 25 years old and unmarried - he left behind his mother, Audrey Dann, his father, Leslie Dann, an older brother, Douglas and two younger brothers, Russell and Neil.
Though Dave was not technically part of my family, I have heard many stories about him, and seen many photos of him, from my parents, who were very close friends of his. In fact, my older brother was named after him. Had he lived, I am sure I would know him. Until one of his blood relatives contacts me to take over management of his memorial, I will proudly keep him among my family members.
