My great-great-grandmother. Her mother was Elizabeth (Liza) Siegfried Neiman, who married twice. Alice's father was named Georg Neiman, and her stepfather was named Albert Kufner. She also had a sister named Sarah and a brother, Edward. Of the three Neiman siblings, she was the youngest. The family lived in Beatty, PA, near St. Vincent's Church in Latrobe. She and her husband Hugo had six children—Alice, Hugh, Frank, Joe, Annie, and George. In 1910 she was left a widow after her husband was killed in a freak accident when a train struck his delivery truck. Her youngest child, my great-great-uncle George, was just a baby when this happened. She and her children managed to get by after this tragic loss with the help of family and friends, though tragedy struck again when Annie, the younger of her two daughters, died in 1913 at the age of ten. Alice lived her entire life in Westmoreland County, PA, and was a parishioner of St. Vincent's Church in Latrobe. In her later years she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was the only living grandparent my paternal grandma ever knew, and because she always lived near them, she and her grandchildren had a very special relationship. My grandmother remembers her own grandmother with so much love, respect, admiration, and fondness. In her final years, Alice lived at the Little Sisters of the Poor home in Pittsburgh, where she was visited by her children and grandchildren and taken good care of by the nuns who ran the place. Though she had remarried eventually, to a man named Adolph Herman, her children had retained their father's name, and she was buried with her first husband Hugo.
