Roger was an avid hunter and fisherman. He knew almost every back road and many trails in the states of Nevada and California. He was born in the Ozarks of Arkansas and was a good horseman. He often had a pet in his household, including a parrot when he was very young, and later a dog, cat or both.

He moved to California in the mid twenties and finished growing up there. He married Edith Largent in 1934 and they had two children, Larry and Joan.

During World War II he worked in the defense industry and was spared the terrible ordeal of combat. He learned his trade of welder and heavy duty mechanic and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union. He and his family moved to Verdi (near Reno), Nevada in January 1946 and then to Reno in September 1948. He had left California and moved to Nevada because he had tuberculosis. He recovered from TB within a year. He loved to pack up a horse or donkey and go fishing or hunting. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service as a restorer of fire trails and was fire-warden at Dog Valley, California in 1948, before moving to Reno.

While he lived in Reno, he worked a short time for the Sunshine Laundry, driving a laundry truck to deliver to his customers. He later went back to his trade and worked as a mechanic and welder for Isbel Construction Co. This job took him to many different areas of Nevada, principally for highway construction. One highway he worked on was the one leading into Lamoille Canyon in the Ruby Mountains of Elko County. He also was involved with the construction of the highway through the tunnel near Carlin, Nevada.

After his retirement he left Reno and ended up residing for for most of his last years in a little settlement called Ruben, near Winchester, Idaho on the Nez Perce Indian reservation. The closest city is Lewiston.

After suffering a stroke in 1993, he eventually returned to Reno and resided there until his death in 2002.
