Lawton was an associate professor at the University of Nevada in Reno Nevada. He received his Phd. in Spanish in 1950 after having served in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He began his teaching career at the University of Nevada (later renamed The University of Nevada at Reno or UNR) in about 1929. After the war, he studied at Stanford University so that he could get his position back at the university in Reno.

At the beginning of his career, he taught history, but after earning his doctorate in 1950, he taught Spanish. He also taught Spanish in Guadalajara, Mexico, with his colleagues from Stanford University.

Lawton had a passion for classical music and during the twenties and thirties had formed a group of music lovers to listen to recordings. His other great love was for the history and culture of Spain and Mexico. His hobbies included horticulture and reading science fiction, fantasy and crime novels. He amassed a large collection of phonograph records (78s and LPs) and books.

In 1955 Lawton began hosting Sunday night concerts and operas on the local (and only) FM radio station in the state of Nevada. KNEV, owned by Everett B. "Jerry" Cobb, featured classical music six evenings a week.

Lawton lived alone after his parents' death. He was a cat lover and always had a few feline companions around the house.

Lawton's parents were Walter G. and Alberta Benson Kline. He had four brothers. One, died as an infant. Aubrey and Walden also preceded him in death, Walden being the only brother who reached adulthood. He lived most of his life in Las Vegas, Nevada. Lawton was a relative of U.S. Senator Charles Henderson, a Democrat who served from 1918 to 1921 filling out a term.

His unusual middle name was from the surname of his maternal grandparents.

Lawton never married and left the bulk of his estate to KUNR-FM, the NPR affiliate with studios at UNR.
