Mabel was adopted by the Thomas Pendray family of Jamestown, North Dakota in June 1903 when she was just 6 years old. She was the biological daughter of Daniel Henry Ohnmeiss and Clara Anna Wren. Her biological siblings were: Raymond Harvey Ohnmeiss, Elsie M. Ohnmeiss, Ida Delphine Ohnmeiss and Phoebe Olive Ohnmeiss. Mabel attended Jamestown public schools. She graduated from Agricultural College in Fargo (now known as North Dakota State University) with a 2 year Domestic Science course certificate. She later graduated with a nurse's degree from Bismarck Hospital, Burleigh county, North Dakota. That is where she met Fred Hagel who was to become her husband. Fred was a patient that she was treating for wounds he received in World War I. They were married in June 1923 and honeymooned at Bismarck, Yellowstone Park and the Black Hills. There were no children from this marriage. She died in a car accident along with her husband in Selby, South Dakota when their Buick collided with the rear wheels of a truck, which was reported to have been backing out on the highway from the parking lot at the Dari-Freeze drive-in. The mishap occurred before 9:00 PM on U.S. Highway 12 and 83, just west of the Kost Oil Station at the west edge of Selby. Her husband was killed immediately and Mabel died in the ambulance on her way to the hospital. Cause of Death: "Fracture of Cervical Spine."
