Samuel Thomas Childrey of Reidsville went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 2nd, 2017, at his home. He was laid to rest on Wednesday, April 5th, in the Greenview Cemetery with military burial rites performed by the Rockingham County Honor Guard and soldiers from the N.C. Army National Guard.

He was 92-years, 7-months old when he departed this earth.

Sam, as he was better known, was a native of Rockingham County and was the son of the late Louis Allan and Etta Clymer Childrey Pryor. He lived his entire life in Reidsville except for his military service.

He was also a proud veteran of the United States Army Air Corps and served his country stateside during World War II.

Sam was a service technician with N.C. Gas Service where he worked for 31 years and was known to many customers in Rockingham County as "Sam the Gas Man." After his retirement from N.C. Gas Service, he then worked and retired from the maintenance department of the Reidsville City Schools. In his early years, he also worked various jobs in the area including the Red Pig Restaurant, the Reidsville Fire Department, and for Z. Griff Smith Lumber. Sam always believed in hard work and staying busy.

In his free time, Sam loved salt water fishing, rabbit and squirrel hunting, and spending as much time as possible at his family property at Oak Island, NC, (formerly known as Long Beach). He was also a dedicated and longtime member of the National Rifle Association.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife of 69 years, Mildred Leake Childrey, and his oldest son, Samuel Wayne Childrey.

Survivors include his sons, Thomas Dwight Childrey and wife Janice; and Mark Lewis Childrey and partner Terrell Bowers, all of Reidsville. Two granddaughters, Deborah Childrey Little and Cassie Childrey Jobe. Two great-grandchildren, Katelyn Little and Devin Little of Reidsville. Daughter-in-law, Carol Underwood Childrey of Reidsville.

During his last few years, Sam enjoyed spending lots of time with his best buddy Max, a rescue from the Danville Area Humane Society. Sam always has a soft spot in his heart for dachshunds like Max and many others before him.

Sam is interred in the front section (block 3) of Greenview Cemetery on Montgomery Street in Reidsville. He is buried next to his wife Mildred (who died October 7th, 2013) and just to the north of the Penn family mausoleum. A granite stone marks their resting place.
