Upon retirement from Sinclair in 1946 he was approached by the Pasadena School District and became the first school crossing guard at Kruse Elementary School. Every child in the school knew "Old Man Abbott". He lived the rest of his life in Pasadena and was well known around town. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Charles Ray in 1939.
