Note: His birth date on his tombstone is inaccurate. He was born in 1885 although he claimed he was born in 1890, dropping his age by 5 years. (The King family had a habit of changing their birth dates and birth places and sometimes their names.)

Lonzo "Lonnie O." King was born March 4, 1885 in Robeson County, North Carolina, the son of William Edward ("Eddie") King and Margurett ("Maggie") Jane Edwards King. (His tombstone lists his birth date as March 4, 1890. The family had a habit of changing their birth dates and birth places and sometimes their names.) He was raised in Robeson County, North Carolina and Dillon County, South Carolina and had at least seven siblings.

Lonnie married his first wife, Lizzie Huggins King, about 1905, and they were the parents of a son, Rembert Lonzo King, and a daughter, Pauline King, and perhaps as many as three other children. Only Rembert seems to have survived to adulthood. After his first wife's death in 1919, he married his second wife, Mary Margaret Chappell King Wright, about 1925, and they had one child, a daughter, Helen Chappell King Greene. Lonnie's ten-year-old son Rembert's first cousin, Walter Kit Bailey, took Rembert in after Lizzie's death.

Around 1910 Lonnie worked at the cotton mill in Dillon, South Carolina. At the time of his death, he was a foreman in Saint Paul's, Robeson County, North Carolina. He was especially close to his widowed sister from Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, Nettie Donnie King Neely Riley, who with her two young sons visited him in 1930.

Lonnie died on March 6, 1931, just two days after his 46th birthday, probably from food poisoning or a heart attack. He is buried near the Chappell family at Sandy Grove Presbyterian Church Cemetery near Raeford, Hoke County, North Carolina. His ancestry was probably English and Scots-Irish. The date of birth on his grave stone is inaccurate.

Thanks so much to his sister Nettie King Neely Riley and other King family researchers for much of this information. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions. If a closer relative than I would like to manage this burial site, please let me know.
