My dad (Daddy, Poppie, Pop) was born in Barberton, Ohio and moved to Portsmouth, VA as a child. He was a graduate of Churchland High School, class of 1959 - home of the Churchland Truckers.
My dad was a character. He had an irreverent sense of humor - sometimes crass - always funny, and he liked a good joke.
He was fond of animals, and I grew up watching many an animal documentary on TV. He would take turtles out of the road so they wouldn't get run over by cars. We enjoyed watching Wiley Coyote on Saturday mornings. He had a faithful companion to the end in his border collie cross named Smokey. My mother calls her his "girlfriend", and Smokey took good care of him.
As a grandfather - Poppie - he enjoyed his grandchildren very much. He gave them rides in the lawnmower wagon and the boat. He built sandboxes and swing sets for them and tried to teach his 3-year-old grandson how to putt a golf ball. They brought him much happiness. He had two grandchildren at the time of his death and has since acquired four great-grandchildren.
Daddy was very mechanically inclined and could make and fix just about anything. We built furniture, our pier at the lake, remodeled a house, and painted a car among other things. He liked cars, especially models from the 50's and restored a beat-up old Studebaker Silver Hawk from top to bottom. It was a sweet ride when he was done.
I am also mechanically inclined and learned from him how to do many things.
Pop worked for the Schlitz brewing company (later bought by Strohs) for over 25 years as a master welder. He was able to retire at age 59 and was ready to take on a life of leisure, but it was short-lived.
Daddy became terminally ill and struggled for a long time before he left us in October of 2007. He is greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew him.

A memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Linwood United Methodist Church in Linwood, with the Rev. Cindy Arnold and the Rev. Russell Myers officiating.
