Gus was the third of five children born to Stavros Dimitrios Panagakos and Efrosinia Kapasulios Panagakos. He left his hometown of Petrina, Greece, on April 19, 1912 and sailed aboard the S.S. Patris to America, arriving at Ellis Island, New York, on May 6, 1912.
He enlisted in the U.S Army on July 24, 1918 and served as a cook during World War I. He was awarded the Victory Medal and received an honorable discharge on September 18, 1919. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen on December 10, 1919.
Gus met Cora May Oakes when they worked together at a restaurant. Grandpa told me that she was a hard worker and was strong as a bull. When I asked him if that was why he married her, he said no - he married her because she was pretty! They were married at Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on September 3, 1920 and raised seven children: Sylvia, Steve, Frossine, Vaselo, William, Ana, and George.
Grandpa was a cook and a caterer, and owned and operated the Faust Restaurant on the Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. He was a member of the Church of the Annunciation of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary in Wilkes-Barre, and a member of the Black Diamond chapter of AHEPA.
