William J. Moores was the youngest son of James Mills Moores and Sarah Kavanaugh. In 1833 W.J. Married Martha "Patsy" Hamilton d/o Andrew & Mary Douglass Hamilton. Patsy died in 1845 leaving him with six son ranging in age from 9 to 1 year, On Nov. 18, 1847 W.J. married the widow Millie Park Scrivner who had six children of her own. William and Millie had only one child that lived to adulthood Candace Moores.

This combined family sent 6 sons to fight in the Union army. Archibald & James A Moores were officers in the 4th Ky Inf. (Later 4th Ky Mounted Inf). John and William Scrivner also served in the 4th Ky and neither survived the war. Ambrose Scrivner served in the 14th Ky Cavalry and Coleman Moores served in the 8th Ky Inf.

Jemima and Keturah Scrivner married their step brothers John A. and Josiah Moores each having large families.
