Arthur Webb was born in the city of Durham, England to Arthur Richard Webb, a schoolmaster, and his wife Elmira (nee Jones). At the age of five he lost his mother to cancer and at the age of eight lost his father to complications due to a stroke. He was raised by his eldest sister Mary Ann and she supported her brother as a schoolmistress. Arthur, at the age of fourteen was sent off as an apprentice in the shipping industry. He did quite well earning his way up the ranks until he became a Master Mariner.
On November 12, 1872 he married Mary Jane Carr at the Holy Trinity church in Hull. Together they had two children. Mary Ann Webb, who is pictured here with her father, was born in 1878 and named after Arthur's sister. Fanny Jane was born in 1885.
On January 31, 1886 his ship the Fulmar, sailing from Troon to Limerick with 500 tons of coal, wrecked off of the West Coast of Ireland during heavy seas. All hands on board perished. Arthur's body was found washed ashore on Farrihy Bay beach. The local newspapers reported that Arthur appeared to have made a desperate attempt to reach land and when he was found that morning, he was still warm. The man who found him claimed that had he had some whiskey he may have been able to revive him.
He left behind his wife Mary Jane, daughter Mary Ann who turned eight years old the following day, and his five month old daughter Fanny Jane who was my Great Grandmother.
Arthur is buried in the Farrihy Churchyard Cemetery in County Clare overlooking the sea and pastures. His gravestone is inscribed:
