LT. GRIEBE DECORATED FOR DESTROYING NEST
Lt. Robert Griebe, 426 46th St, of Co. G, 110th Inf., formerly of Co. E 305th Inf., received his commission in France. He graduated from the Officers' Training School at Camp Upton. He writes: "We were held up by a machine gun nest for a long while and it was so located that we could not pass until it was knocked ou. Our major picked on me to take some men and get the Dutch out. I started off with a few men. We got along alright and crawled up on them. We arrived at one spot where we were on one side of a wall and they were on the other. I told my men (5 of them) that the only thing to do was to hop over and surprise them, so over we went and it was funny. I landed astride of the gun and although as much surprised as the gunner who was operating the gun, I had presence of mind enough to shoot him. The boys disposed of the rest of them. (I think there were 8 others) and for that the French with whom our outfit was working handed me the Croix de Guerre with palm. I got a machine gun bullet in the leg before we got there and went back for a few weeks rest. Those French hand you a decoration for almost anything." ~Brooklyn Daily Eagle, January 19, 1919.
