Peter J. Brunner was born in Plum City, Wisconsin to John (Johannes) and Magdalena Kienholz Brunner. He received education in the common schools and learned farming with his father. About 1884, Peter purchased 160 acres of land in Springfield Township, St. Croix county. He married Ida Mae Barney in December 1884, in Hersey, Wisconsin. They had at least ten children, perhaps eleven. He erected a log cabin which he lived in for 18 years. He carried on a general farming business with considerable dairying. Peter was the first to put a water pump inside a house, placing it next to the kitchen sink. He was involved in the community; he was a Republican, member of the side board, and served as road commissioner. When he died, a large funeral was held; his granddaughters acted as flower girls, and his grandsons acted as ushers.
