Bob was the 9th of thirteen children born on a farm in Delphos, Ohio. His father died when he was sixteen years old. As his older siblings left home, Bob stayed at home to help his mother as she raised the five youngest children. He started work briefly for the Lima Locomotive Works. Shortly thereafter America entered WW II and Bob enlisted in the Army to serve his fellow Americans. He married Maude Rogers in St. Johns Catholic Church on November 22, 1943 and returned to battle shortly thereafter. The following year he was serving in the Battle of the Bulge that occurred from December 16, 1944 to January 25 1945 and received a purple heart when he was wounded.
After discharge from the army Bob started work for Clark Equipment Company in Lima where he continued to work for the next 40 years, until his retirement in 1985. About 1952 Bob and Maude served as sponsors for the confirmations of their nephew and niece. Around 1956 Bob and Maude moved to a small farm on the North side of Wapakoneta. Since Bob had been raised on a farm he was comfortable with his role there. He continued to work full time for Clark Equipment Company making the drive from Wapak to Lima and back again five days a week and allotting the time necessary to operate his small farm successfully. After his retirement, he continued to farm until his death the following year.
His only son married when Bob was 52, and his wife Maude died a month later, quite unexpectedly. Two years later on May 22, 1973 he married Dorothy Rose Eilerman, the widow of Matthew DeVita. Now he had five step-children in addition to his son. His son and daughter-in-law presented him with three granddaughters before his death in 1986. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wapakoneta.
Bob was an easygoing even tempered man, who seemed to take pleasure in confronting the tasks at hand. Maybe his place in a family of thirteen children played a role in his apparent preference to work unaided on his farm. He seemed to enjoy the peace and solemnity the farm provided him.
