Joab Sublett was the son of John Green ("Fighting Jack") Sublett and Sarah (Sallie) T. Barnes. He was the youngest of 10 children. Joab married Ruth Lee Anderton in 1921 and had 4 sons together: Joab (Junior), Bruce Duane (Duane), Roy Wendell, and Roger Fay. He served as a Corporal in the 349 Infantry, 88th Division, Company M during World War I. While serving overseas in Alsace, France, he was gassed and suffered from nerve damage the remainder of his life.
