Born in an area of Virginia that became West Virginia as a consequence of the American Civil War, Sophia married John BEARD on November 20, 1818, in Campbell County, Kentucky. The bondsman for the marriage was Samuel W. MORRISON.

In 1820, Sophia and her husband were living in Tiffin Township, Adams County, Ohio. Her husband was farming. Sometime before their first child was born in April 1823, they had moved into Darke County, Ohio.

In 1830, Sophia, John, and their first five children (John M., Sarah, Permelia, Mary Jane, and Rachel) were in Harrison Township, Darke County, Ohio.

The family moved to Carroll County, Indiana, in 1835.

She was widowed in 1854. Soon after 1870, she moved to Grayson Co., Texas, with her youngest son, Alexander. By the time of the move, Alexander was married and the father of four children.

Sophia was the daughter of John MORE II (1772-1841) and Sarah GANDY (b. 1778). Her parents were Quakers.

She was the sister of Samuel, Eli, Sarah, John William, Rachel (m. Aaron PEARSON), Hulda, and William G.

With her husband John BEARD (1794-1854), Sophia had nine children: John M., Sarah, Permilia, Mary Jane, Rachel, William, Eli, Jemima, and Alexander.

She is listed on the 1850 census in Clay Township, Carroll Co., Indiana. Sophia was living with her husband and with their children: Rachel (20), William (18), Eli (16), Jemima (12), Alexander (9). Also in the household were her two grandsons Alex and Moses WELDY (9 and 7) and their father, John (35). The grandsons were the sons of Sophia's daughter Permilia, dead by the 1850 census.

She is listed on the 1860 census in Clay Township, Carroll Co., Indiana. Sophia was 58, widowed, and living with her son Alex (19), with her granddaugher Josephine St. JOHN (6), and with a 15-year-old girl named Melissa BRACKNEY. Josephine was the daughter of Sophia's daughter Rachel, who had died in 1854. It's likely that Sophia raised the child from infancy. (Melissa was the daughter of Sophia's son John's 1st wife's brother.)

By the time of the 1870 census, Sophia was living in Richland Township, Benton Co., Indiana, with her son Alex, his wife, and their two young children.

Sophia's maternal grandparents were Samuel GANDY and Rachel COMBS.

NOTE: There is autosomal DNA proof for descendants from seven of Sophia's children:
John M., Amelia Ann, Sarah, Mary Jane, William Andrew, Eli, and Alexander.
