Detective Reifel was shot and killed while questioning a homicide suspect on 26th Street. He and his partner had located the man and began to question him when the man suddenly produced a gun and shot them both, fatally wounding Detective Reifel. Another responding detective was able to shoot the suspect. Detective Reifel had been with the agency for eight years and was survived by his wife and three children.

John was killed in the line of duty on the Galveston Police Force where he served as a detective. He was only 44 years old. He was an avid fisherman. John and Blanche had three daughters including artist Yvonne Reifel Macik Hill who had a daughter Andrea Macik Cheatham.
