Evelyn Marie Heiney was the first child born to Lewis Ernest and Luella Marie (Waugh) Heiney on September 18, 1944 in Burbank, California. At the time of her birth, her father was working as a metallurgist for an airplane manufacturer and her mother was a housewife. After her father was inducted into the Army during WWII, the family moved to Dayton, Ohio. There, at the age of 17 months, she became ill and passed away due to pneumonia. She is buried in Dodge City, Kansas next to her great-grandparents Heiney. Her father and grandparents Heiney were from Bloom, Kansas and her mother from Ashland, Kansas.

As told by her mother and the many pictures of her, she was a very happy child. Her parents spoke many times about Evelyn's desire to hold her bottle with her feet instead of her hands and would then stick her thumbs in her ears. They had guessed that maybe she enjoyed hearing herself swallow.

Being her youngest sister, not born until 10 years after she passed, there is a space in my heart where only pictures and stories of my eldest sister, Evelyn, happily reside. I look forward to the day when we can meet in heaven!
