My beautiful grandmother. She was born in Elmwood, Wisconsin, the youngest daughter of George Andrew Manley and Minnie Mae Nutter. In January of 1922 she married Alfonse Johnson, a handsome young Swedish carpenter and they rented a little tiny house in the little tiny village of Haugen (pop. 249). Nine months later my mother, Marjorie, was born. The winters are cold in Wisconsin!
Soon thereafter, they left for the big city of Chicago, where they lived until 1929. Two things happened that October. First, my Uncle Roger was born (Oct. 24) then the Stock Market crashed 5 days later. Before long the little family was back in Wisconsin struggling through the depression. During this time, my grandparents ran a mail route together. Like most people, they had a garden and picked up work where they could. In 1932, my Aunt Kay was born, completing the family.
I grew up on depression stories, but they weren't depressing. They were stories about how people dig down deep and just do what needs to be done. I never saw my grandparents waste ANYTHING. I loved it when they came to visit us in Florida when I was a little girl because if we had rice left over from supper one night... we would have rice pudding the next! She never met an antique she couldn't restore or a piece of fabric she couldn't whip into something wonderful - and she made the best strawberry jam and the ONLY apple dumplings I've ever had. She left us on June 28, 1992 at age 89 and I still miss her.
