My dad, Eric Henry Williams, was the 5th child of a family of 11 born to John Charles Williams and Lydia Oberg.
During his childhood he experience a long spell in hospital, and later as a young man just starting work, he had the dubious honour of being one of the first people to be struck by a car in Brisbane.
Dad married Florence Gerard and 3 sons were born to them before he enlisted in the A.I.F. on 17 July 1940. From 3rd Infantry Training Battalion, he transferred to the newly formed 2/26 Battalion.
Dad saw action in Malaya and Singapore, was taken Prisoner at the Fall of Singapore, and slaved on the Thai Burma Railway.
He was discharged from the Army in December 1945, and soon after (1947) welcomed his first daughter into the world. Another daughter followed in 1949.
Dad was an avid and talented fisherman, often catching fish when others around him were having no luck. Many holidays and week-ends were spent over at Stradbroke Island,and Friday nights saw him "throwing a line" for bream or mullet not too far from home.
In 1964, approx 6 months after his eldest daughters marriage, at which he proudly gave her away, he was diagnosed with cancer and given 2 years to live.
Unfortunately, he did not live even the two years, and passed away in Greenslopes Military Hospital in Brisbane.
After a military funeral, he was cremated, and his ashes placed in a niche on the Memorial Walls at Mt Thompson Crematorium, Brisbane.
He was not only my dearly, beloved father, but also my HERO. I miss him dearly to this day.
He was survived by his wife Florence (now deceased);sons, Eric (deceased 2014), Neil (deceased 2014) and Douglas, daughters, Muriel and Wendy and five grand-children.
Footnote: As of 15th August 2010, Dad's descendants now number:- 15 grand-children; 37 (+ 1 deceased) great grand-children and 1 great great grand-child.
