Mervin Fichtner was a decorated veteran of the Normandy landings in World War 2. He had served thru most of the war. He was married to Colleen. He was the father of Dwight and they both still survive him. Merv was a school teacher for many years and lived in Orange County Calif for many years as well. His last teaching job before he retired was at La Quinta High School in Westminister Calif. Ill never forget the time when I was just a freshman at the school and I had to take a message to him in class, I told him hey Merv i got a message for ya. Well I was used to calling him Merv,he leaned over and whispered to me ,uh Jim when we are in school will you call me Mr. Fichtner. He used to pay me every week to sweep his gutter and sidewalk and thats how i got my first car,a 1957 Chevy truck with no engine in it. I saved up for about a year. Merv and I were even business partners,he drew these Christmas deer on wood and I cut them out on my scroll saw,then he would assemble them,now keep in mind this was a top secret project and I was not allowed to tell anyone about our design,it was a design already in use all over. This happened when i was about 12 or 13 years old. These are the things that i will always remember about good ol Merv,like I said before he was a great man.I know I seem a little informal calling him Merv,but thats because he wanted to be called Merv by his nieghbors.I hope that by calling him Merv that does not disrespect him in anyway.This man deserved all the Respect in the World.
