Corporal George Swanson was awarded the Silver Star citation for gallantry in action at Ypres-Lys in 1918.
On August 7, 1942 the United States Congress authorized the Silver Star medal to replace the Silver Star citation. Veterans were to 'exchange' their citations for the medal.
It was too late. George W Swanson died 18 months earlier on February 17, 1941. He did not live to see his Silver Star medal.
George William Swanson was born in Apple River, Illinois. He was the son of Swedish immigrants Edward Swanson and Caroline Peterson.
He was their oldest son and a brother to Oscar, Roy and Albin Swanson.
He grew up in Riverside, California and was educated at the local schools.
Before World War I; he worked various jobs. One of those jobs was as a laborer in his Uncle Harry Martin's orange groves in Riverside.
He married Mable Clara Hummer on August 28, 1910 in Los Angeles County, California. They had one son, Richard William born on March 3, 1911 in Los Angeles County, California.
He entered military service with National Army of the United States and trained at Camp Lewis, Washington (now Fort Lewis, Washington).
Overseas, he saw action at Meusse-Argonne, Ypres-Lys and the Lorraine sector and Belgium.
On a postcard to his Aunt Jennie Martin he wrote: "I saw Oscar on Armistice Day and boy was he happy." Oscar was his brother and my grandfather.
After the war; George worked as a deputy for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He left that position and became a policeman for the City of Riverside. He mainly worked in the Arlington area.
He married a widow, Mary Effie Koepple Frost sometime in early 1920s. Mary had two daughters, Violet Evelyn and Thelma Emmaline. George and Mary later divorced.
George died in Los Angeles County at the National Military Home at Sawtelle of complications following an operation.
