Sarah "Sallie" Elizabeth Flowers was born on September 3rd of 1860 in Grand Saline, Van Zandt County, Texas.

Sarah's parents are likely William H. Flowers and Henrietta Caroline Kuykendall. William H. Flowers died before 1865 and Henrietta remarried and her family relocated to Rockwall County, Texas before 1877. This is a perfect fit for Sarah's obituary. Sarah Elizabeth Flowers was not born until after the 1860 Census was taken, so she does not appear with her parents and in 1875, the Rockwall County, Texas Courthouse was burned to the ground by an arsonist and all records were lost. Because she is out of the house and married by 1880, she never appears with her parents. William H. Flowers and Henrietta Caroline Kuykendall did have at least two other girls but it is unknown who they married. Since Sarah Elizabeth Flowers Doss had only boys, the mt-DNA line ended with her, so the only way left to prove a connection would be autosomal DNA if the descendants of her probable sisters could be located and are willing to test.

The Bridgeport Index Newspaper has an obituary for Sarah and in this obituary, it says that Sarah relocated with her family to Rowlett, Texas, after her father died, where she went on to marry Joseph Ely Doss in 1877.

The couple went on to have eight sons.

After marrying, they moved to Wise County, Texas, five miles northeast of Decatur and resided in Wise County until 1908 when the family moved to Wilbarger County, Texas.

Sarah appears in the 1900 Census, which says that her and Joseph were married for 22 years.

She appears on the 1910 Wilbarger County, Texas Census with her husband, Joseph and three of their children, William, Felix and Virgil.

In 1920, Sarah, along with her husband, moved to Bridgeport, Wise County, Texas, until his death in 1923. After this time, Sarah resided with her children.

She appears on the 1920 Bridgeport, Wise County, Texas Census with her husband and their son, Virgil.

Sarah Elizabeth Flowers Doss attended Willow View Baptist Church in Quanah, Texas.

She passed away on April 4th, 1947 in Tom Green County, Texas.

12/21/15 UPDATE : Autosomal DNA evidence supports the conclusion that Sarah Elizabeth Flowers was a descendant of Henrietta Caroline Kuykendall and William H. Flowers.

01/02/18 UPDATE : Mary Bell Flowers has been located! The obituary for Mary Bell Doss Bildstein explicitly names Mrs. J. E. Doss and Lillie Smith as her sisters.

Update 03/10/2023 : A cousin has come forth with handwritten letters from Lillie Smith, stating that "Syntha died young", and that Henrietta was a widow when she remarried. Although we know that William Flowers ultimately survived, it now makes sense as to why there was no divorce decree.
