Genealogical Quarterly, Vol. VI NO. 1, January 1983; Enoch Estep. One the 11th of January, 1926, Enoch Estep died at his house at Rock House, Raleigh County, at the age of 90. He was born on Big Coal Laurel - get the time - on the 5th of December, 1835, in Andrew Jackson's administration. He lived at his birthplace until about 1900, when he moved into Raleigh. AT THE COURTHOUSE OF BOONE COUNTY, JANUARY 10, 1860.
Preston P. Linville, Anderson Barker, John Hager, Jonathan Douglas and E. S. Miller, gentlemen justices, who composed the court and proceeded to the trial and examination of Enoch Estep charged with a felony by him committed within the County of Boone and within the jurisdiction of this court for this that he did on the 24th day of December, 1859, in the said county unlawfully, maliciously and feloniously stab, cut and wound one Morris Ferrell with intent to maim, disfigure, disable and kill him the said Morris Ferrell.

The defendant this day appeared in the discharge of his recognizance entered into before James Pomeroy, gentleman justice of this county, and after hearing the evidence the court is of opinion that the offense aforesaid with which the defendant Enoch Estep stands charged and ought to be tried in the Circuit Court for the County of Boone by a jury of the county and this case is remanded to the Circuit Court of Boone County at the next term thereof.

And thereupon the defendant moved the court to admit him to bail himself for his personal appearance before the jury of the Circuit Court for the county of Boone on the first day of the next spring term thereof. Which motion the Court sustained allowing the defendant to enter into recognizance, in the sum of two hundred fifty dollars to himself and with one or more good security in the like sum of two hundred and fifty dollars.

And thereupon the said Enoch Estep together with Samuel Smoot, Squire Thompson, Joel Baldwin, Jesse H. Baldwin and Squire Estep, his security, personally appeared in open court and acknowledged themselves to owe and be indebted to the Commonwealth of Virginia as follows:

The said Enoch Estep in the sum of $250 and the said Samuel Smoot, Squire Thompson, Joel Baldwin, Jesse H Baldwin, and Squire Estep in the sum of $250.00 to be levied of their respective goods and chattel lands and tenements to the use of the Commonwealth of Virgina only.

But if the above bound Enoch Estep do make his appearance before the Judge of the Circuit Court for the County of Boone on the first day of the spring term next of the said court to answer said court on a bill of indictment to be preferred against him by the grand jury for the cutting, stabbing and wounding of one Morris Ferrell. And not depart therein without leave of said court then this recognizance to be void otherwise to remain in full force and vesture.

Be it remembered that on the 10th day of January, 1860, Morris Ferrell, William Farley, George Ferrell, Edwin Griffith and Ballard Farrell appeared in court and acknowledged themselves to owe and be indebted to the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of fifty dollars each to be levied of their respective goods, chattel lands and tenements to use of the Commonwealth only.

But if the said Morris Ferrell, William Farley, George Ferrell, Edwin Griffith and Ballard Ferrell do make their personal appearance before the Judge of the Circuit Court of Boone County on the first day of the spring term next, to give evidence on a bill of indictment to be preferred against Enoch Estep by the grand jury for felony and not depart therein without the leave of said court then this recognizance to be void else to remain in full force and vesture.

Be it remembered that on this 10th day of January, 1860, Joel Baldwin, William Cooper, Jesse H Baldwin, in his own right and for John Baldwin, appeared in open court and acknowledged themselves to owe and be indebted to the Commonwealth of Virginia in the sum of fifty dollars to be levied of their respective goods and chattel lands and tenements to the use of the Commonwealth of Virginia only.

But the said Joel Baldwin, William Cooper, Jesse H Baldwin and John Baldwin do make their personal appearances before the Judge of the Circuit Court of Boone County on the first day of the spring term next to give evidence on behalf of Enoch Estep and in opposition to the Commonwealth on a charge of felony and not depart thence without leave of said court then the recognizance to be void else to remain in full force and vesture.
