SURFSIDE BEACH | James Doss Petty Sr., 84, died Saturday, January 2, 2010 at his home.

Mr. Petty was born October 14, 1925 in Society Hill, South Carolina, son of the late William Doss and Fannie Louise Freeman Petty. He moved to Hartsville in 1929. Mr. Petty was a World War II veteran, serving as Chief Petty Officer on ammunition ships, and a member of the American Legion. He lettered in football and baseball in 1940 and 1941.

In 1946 Mr. Petty completed aviation school and earned his wings as a private pilot. He attended Kings Business College in 1947, and Belmont Abby Junior College, on a football scholarship. In 1949 he transferred to the University of South Carolina to play football and baseball. Mr. Petty was Scout Master of Troop No. 513 in Hartsville from 1952 until 1974, and also coached football and baseball for 45 years. He also served as a Bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hartsville from 1979 until 1981. In 1982 Mr. Petty retired from the Real Estate Development field and moved to Myrtle Beach.

Mr. Petty was predeceased by his first wife, Nina Petty, to whom he was married from 1952 until 1982.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Theresa A. Petty of the home; children, Zane Paul Petty, Kurt Gene Petty, Cheryl Petty, James D. Petty Jr., LeGrand Richard Petty, Alayne Preselar, and Joel Wynn Petty; grandchildren, Blake Anderson, Eric Anderson, Marleina Harvey, Christopher Petty, John Michael Petty, Adriene Evitt, Richie Petty, Brian Petty, Amber Petty, Jonathan Brown, Jade Brown, and Ashton Petty; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Dorothy Watkins of Florence, and Jackie Jones of Hartsville.

Graveside services with military honors will be held 4 p.m. Monday, January 4, 2010 at Hillcrest Cemetery with Bishop Jerry Edwards officiating.
