Vera Bruce, an Australian-born circus performer, joined "The Flying Codonas" aerial troupe in 1921, after Victoria Codona quit the act. Bruce performed with brothers Alfredo and Lalo Codona around the world as featured performers with the Ringling Bros. Circus.
In 1928, Alfredo Codona married another circus star, aerialist Lillian Leitzel. Leitzel died after a fall while performing in Copenhagen in 1931, and Codona married Bruce on Sept. 18, 1932.
Codona and Bruce were living in Long Beach, Calif., when Bruce filed for divorce. The divorce was granted on July 1, 1937. On July 30, Codona and Bruce were meeting in the office of Bruce's lawyer to discuss the division of their personal property when Codona pulled out a gun, shot Bruce five times, then shot himself. Codona died at the scene, and Bruce died the next day at Seaside Hospital in Long Beach.
