He was the youngest son of Joseph & Letitia Murphy Oliver of Pittsburgh, PA. He married Mary Cool in 1866, Pittsburgh. Shortly after he moved to Belpre, Washington Co., OH where he lived most of his life. He was a building contractor and mover. He was foreman of construction for B & O Railroad Bridge which crossed the Ohio River from Parkersburg, WV to Belpre, OH.
