Per his civil war service record, his date of birth was 21 June 1839. He enlisted as a private on 23 April 1861 in Pennsylvania (he was a resident of Scranton), and was mustered out 29 July 1861 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. His widow filed pension application #644601 on 1 December 1896, giving his cause of death as miner's consumption. The Emigrant Savings Bank in New York has records for a George Flewellen that MAY be this one. He is shown as opening an account in 1864. He was single, born in County Kilkenny in 1836, lived at 249 7th, and worked as a laborer. He arrived in 1859 on the "Tornado." His parents in Ireland were Thomas and Elizabeth, and he had four brothers and one sister. There are a number of records for other Georges with a similar last name and approximate birth date, including censuses in George, Florida, a will inventory in New York, etc., but the four I have researched have turned out to be born in the United States.

Censused 1880 in Virginia City, Storey county, Nevada, as "George Fluellen," aged 38 (born ~1842), born Ireland (both parents also born Ireland), a miner; wife Ellen, 35, Ireland (Ireland/Ireland); children, Elizabeth M. (3), Lillie A. (2), Samuel H. (6/12), and George T. (6/12) [all children born Nevada, both parents born Ireland].

Other than what appears on the gravestone, all information should be sourced. The photograph is almost certainly NOT of George Flewellen. Most of these photos were unidentified persons displayed and/or sold as postcards at a (now closed) Virginia City museum.]
