Vernon was the 4th son of George and Eliza Mathews, born in Ovid, Yates co NY. inlisted with the 1st MI and 2nd Lt for the 27th USCT stationed in Ohio, during the civil war 1861-1865.He was also the founder of Oberon, ND...his siblings are Simon, George B, Martin, Sabra, Henrietta Eliza, and Reuben T. this is all confirmed by a bible record that I have from his military record
