Bernard was born and grow up in Barberton, Ohio. He was the youngest son of Michael & Mary McGivern. After high school he attended John Carroll University. He was the husband of the former Gladys Wenner, also of Barberton. He had one older brother, Joseph, and five sisters, Mary, Katherine, Ann, Eileen and Nora. Bernard went overseas in December 1944 and was a navigator with the 493rd bomber group. His plane was shot down, and he was killed by civilians shooting as he parachuted to the ground on March 3, 1945 over Hildesheim, Germany.
