J. "Ed" Stockdale, prominent Estherville grain dealer and elevator operator, son of Alexander Stockdale and Elizabeth Eseke. He received his elementary and high school education in Walcott, IA, and attended the State University of Iowa.
He moved to Estherville, IA in 1906. He was the operator of the oldest existing grain business in Iowa, a business founded in 1854 at Walcott by his father. He had been in the grain business since the age of fifteen when he became associated in his father's business.
At one time, Ed operated twelve elevators located throughout the state and at the time of his death, had elevators at Milford, Melvin and Cloverdale.
Ed was united in marriage to Ruth Bachman, daughter of Dr. E.Walton Bachman on February 8, 1908
Ed served as Mayor of Estherville from April 3, 1911 to April 7, 1913 and was on the city council for six terms on three different occasions. He had been a member of the Oak Hill Cemetery Association Board for thirty years and was county chairman for U.S. savings bonds.
The two were members of the Grace Episcopal Church, where Ed served on the Vestry Board of the church for many years. He also was a member of the Masons, B.P.O. Elks and Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Ed served on the Coleman Hospital Board and continued after Dr. Coleman's death on the Holy Family Hospital board. He was a director of the Iowa Trust & Savings Bank for many years.
He was responsible for the Estherville light and power development in the city. He died in his office, where his secretary heard a thud, and found him slumped onto his desk.
