William Van der Roest was a trolley car driver in 1900 and then went on to become a fireman. He stayed with the fire department until at least 1920. He was still working as a fireman at 52yoa. He helped to raise Catherine Beisman who was originally adopted by his parents, Christian and Bertha Van der Roest. When his parents died, he and his wife, Sadie, continued to raise her to adulthood.
