Elmer was the son of Omer and Laura Ray. He graduated from Granger High School, Granger, Yakima Co., Washington in 1933. He was a Pharmacists Mate (later known as Hospital Corpsmen) during WW2. He was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the attack. He was on the USS Massachusetts nicknamed (Big Mamie) from December 1943 to the end of the war. He became a pharmacist after the war. He graduated from WSU in Pullman, Washington.
