LaVern was born in Oshkosh, Wi. and was the only child of Harry and Nora (Brandt) Wilke. She married Lester E. Merten on May 5, 1951. She had two children, David and Shari. LaVern went to beauty school of cosmetology in Milwaukee, Wisconsin out of high school and became a beauty operator. She owned three beauty salons in Oshkosh and also taught cosmetology in Oshkosh for a short period. She died of bone cancer on 2/27/89.
