Uva Beth Hess, daughter of Phillip and Anna Dralle Hess, was born born January 30, 1896, near Williamstown, Mo. When about four years of age, she moved with her parents to the home near Tolona, where she lived until moving to Lewistown in 1920. The past 13 years she resided in Kirksville during the school year. She was graduated from Canton High School in 1914 and the Kirksville State Teachers College in 1928. She then attended the University of Iowa and the University of Colorado. Miss Hess taught in the rural schools of Lewis County and the Lewistown grades for 13 years after which she taught in the Kirksville grade school until ill health caused her retirement. While in high school she joined the Methodist Church in Canton, later moving her membership to Lewistown and Kirksville. Her unusual devotion to and interest in her work made her a teacher of remarkable ability, which was appreciated by those with whom she worked. She enjoyed her Christian life. Her philosophy of life was one of happiness, kindness and generosity. She devoted her life to her school, her home and her church. During her illness she was tenderly cared for by her sister, Mrs. Robert Ewalt, and husband of near Knox City. She maintained a spirit of cheerfulness and friends remarked that they were lifted up by a visit to her bedside. She leaves to mourn her passing the sister, Mrs. Ewalt and a brother, Prof. Eugene D. Hess of Auburn, Ala., besides a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted Saturday morning at 10:30 in the Lewistown Methodist Church with the pastor, the Rev. J. W. Nelson, in charge.
