Ada Hicks was the 3rd child (all girls) born to Hugh Bascom & Edna Sue (Moore) Hicks. Her two older sisters were named Mary Edna & Alma Agnes. Her mother died during child birth when she was just 2 1/2 years old as well as her new little brother, the first son born to the family. In a few years her father brought home a "new mother", Ione (Dabney) Hicks. Ione took the three little girls as her own plus had 7 more children with Hugh. Ada never married, instead she dedicated her life to nursing & her many nieces & nephews. Unfortunately, many of her nieces & nephews memories of her (as well as mine, her grandniece) was that of "the mean old lady with the needle". In order to help her family out, she would administer shots to all of us to help save money. I remember hating to hear the words "We're going to see Aunt Ada" ...... that always meant we were going to get a shot (I hated those polio shots). I'm sure we went to visit her when we didn't get a shot, but I don't remember those times. Her wish was to be cremated. Two months after her death, her half sister, Virginia Ruth (Hicks) Roark passed away & Ada's ashes were placed inside Virginia's casket and they were buried together.
