Nathaniel was the son of Mary Francis Dale (she died January 3, 1873) and John Heaney (Born in Ireland, possibly Co. Monaghan, he died November 12, 1876) He married Jean Campbell on February 16, 1868 in Newtown, Long Island, New York. Nathaniel was a tinsmith by trade. He was buried on February 13, 1893, at 47 years of age. His son, Edwin, then died 20 days after him. He was only 14 years old.
Elmhurst was called Newtown at the time of Nathaniel's death.
