Death, at last, has claimed the life of Fremont's oldest resident, Lewis C. Roquet, who, last July, had reached the ripe old age of 97 years. He passed away Monday, Nov. 22, at 3a.m. at the St. Joseph Hospital in Ottumwa, where he had been taken following a fall, which broke his hip, at the house of his son, Walter.
Although Mr. Roquet had been very inactive for a number of years, he enjoyed very good health, and was able to be up and around the house some every day, and ate very well. His eyesight and hearing have been somewhat effected for the last few years, and he spent the time very quietly, sleeping most of the time. Since the age of 94 years, he has made his home with son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Roquet.
Mr. Roquet was born in Germany July 18, 1846 and came to this country at the age of 4 years, and has lived in and near Fremont the rest of his life. He made his home for a number of years in a log cabin three-quarter of a mile northeast of Fremont, later building a new home on the farm, where he resided until March, 1912, when he with his wife moved to Fremont. Mrs. Roquet preceded him in death in March, 1917.
Surviving are eight children: Mrs Cora Hockett of Flora, Ore.; Hamer A. Roquet of Long Beach, Calif.; George R, Roquet of Arlington; Earl Roquet of Des Moines; Mrs. Charlie O. Robbins of Martinsburg; Chester A., Ira C., and Walter A. Roquet all of Fremont; 34 grandchildren and 70 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov 27th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Methodist church in Fremont. The body will be left at the Community Funeral Home in Ottumwa until one o'clock Saturday, when it will be brought to the church. Services will be conducted by Rev. Edgar L. Knight, pastor of the Christian church of Oskaloosa, assisted by Rev. J. W. Zerbe of Fremont. Burial will be in the Cedar Township cemetery.

Lewis Cole Roquet, son of Frederick and Kathrina Roquet, was born July 18, 1846 in Dirmstein, Bavaria, Germany, and died at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa, Ia., Nov. 22, 1943, at the age of 97 years, 4 months and 4 days.
In the summer of 1851 he came to America with his father and mother, three brothers, Phillip, Frank and Charlie, and one sister, Louise. Forty-one days and nights were required for the trip across the Atlantic. After landing in America, the family made their first home at Noblesville, Hamilton county, Ind. It was here that his mother and sister passed away and were buried at the same time. About the year of 1855, the remaining family came to Fremont.
On February, 18, 1869, he was united in marriage to Margaret Jane Yeoman, and to this union were born six sons and three daughters.
In March, 1874, the family moved to a farm two miles east of Fremont, where they resided until March 1912, they retired to their home in Fremont, having lived on the farm for 38 years. About fifty years ago he accepted Christ as his Savior, and was a staunch supporter of the Fremont Christian church.
His wife passed away March 10, 1917, and one daughter, Mrs. Andy Waltman preceded him in death on February 12, 1941.
With the aid of relatives and friends he kept his own home going, until the last three years he has been cared for in the home of his son, Walter. During the past years he has enjoyed many happy times with his nine children, 34 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, and some great, great grandchildren. The surviving children are: Mrs. Cora Hockett, Enterprise, Ore.; Hamer Roquet, Long Beach, Calif.; George Roquet, Arlington, Ia.; Chester, Ira and Walter, Fremont, Ia.; Mrs. Charles Robbins, Martinsburg, Ia. and Earl Roquet , Des Moines, Ia.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 27, 1943, at two o'clock, at the Methodist church in Fremont conducted by Edgar L. Knight, pastor of the Christian church in Oskaloosa, assisted by Rev. J. W. Zerbe. Mrs. Mae Lee and Coen Ehrenhard sang, "Going Down the Valley," "Rock of Ages" and "God Will Take Care of You," accompanied by Mrs. Ben Roof. The six sons were pall bearers. Interment was made in the Cedar township cemetery.

Lewis Cole Roquet, son of Frederick and Kathrina Roquet, was born July 18, 1846 in Dirmstein, Bavaria, Germany, and died at the St. Joseph hospital in Ottumwa, Ia., Nov. 22, 1943, at the age of 97 years, 4 months and 4 days.
In the summer of 1851 he came to America with his father and mother, three brothers, Phillip, Frank and Charlie, and one sister, Louise. Forty-one days and nights were required for the trip across the Atlantic. After landing in America, the family made their first home at Noblesville, Hamilton county, Ind. It was here that his mother and sister passed away and were buried at the same time. About the year of 1855, the remaining family came to Fremont.
On February, 18, 1869, he was united in marriage to Margaret Jane Yeoman, and to this union were born six sons and three daughters.
In March, 1874, the family moved to a farm two miles east of Fremont, where they resided until March 1912, they retired to their home in Fremont, having lived on the farm for 38 years. About fifty years ago he accepted Christ as his Savior, and was a staunch supporter of the Fremont Christian church.
His wife passed away March 10, 1917, and one daughter, Mrs. Andy Waltman preceded him in death on February 12, 1941.
With the aid of relatives and friends he kept his own home going, until the last three years he has been cared for in the home of his son, Walter. During the past years he has enjoyed many happy times with his nine children, 34 grandchildren, 59 great grandchildren, and some great, great grandchildren. The surviving children are: Mrs. Cora Hockett, Enterprise, Ore.; Hamer Roquet, Long Beach, Calif.; George Roquet, Arlington, Ia.; Chester, Ira and Walter, Fremont, Ia.; Mrs. Charles Robbins, Martinsburg, Ia. and Earl Roquet , Des Moines, Ia.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 27, 1943, at two o'clock, at the Methodist church in Fremont conducted by Edgar L. Knight, pastor of the Christian church in Oskaloosa, assisted by Rev. J. W. Zerbe. Mrs. Mae Lee and Coen Ehrenhard sang, "Going Down the Valley," "Rock of Ages" and "God Will Take Care of You," accompanied by Mrs. Ben Roof. The six sons were pall bearers. Interment was made in the Cedar township cemetery.

F. Koontz of Hedrick; Mrs. Reva Moore of Milton; Mr. and Mrs. C.O. Robbins, Mr. and Mrs. Zack McBeth of Martinsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Roquet and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Glen Cornell and sons, of Ottumwa; Mrs. Floyd Waltman and Mrs. Arthur Pumphrey of Librtyville; Mrs. Harold Hedlund and children of Pekin; Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Webber and sons of Cedar; and Mrs. Hazel Wolfe and Mrs. Virgil Locke of Oskaloosa.
