Nicholas died on Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day, He was a Army medic. For some time he was listed as Missing In Action but later that was revised to Killed In Action. The army said there was evidence that he died in action. His body was never recovered. His name, along with 1,556 other Americans who lost their lives in the Normandy campaign, but could not be located and/or identified, is inscribed on the Walls of the Missing in a semicircular garden at the east side of the memorial.
He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, Bronze Star and the Purple Heart posthumously.
