Son of Yachiyo and Hajime Kuge, Toshiya Kuge was a 20-year old sophomore in the school of science and engineering at Waseda University in Tokyo. He hoped to obtain a graduate degree from an American university. In April of 2001 he took a course to help improve his English skills at the University of Utah. Kuge was flying home after vacationing and visiting colleges in the United States and Canada. His mother traveled to the crash site where she left a Japanese flag and origami birds in his honor.
