George H. "Hank" Niland Jr., 84, of Taunton, formerly of Easton and Bonita Springs, FL., died Wednesday, October 13, 2010 at St. Joseph's Manor in Brockton after a period of failing health. He was the husband of Nancy (Norton) Niland for 59 years. Born in Boston on May 15, 1926, a son of the late George H. and Catherine (Lally) Niland Sr., he was raised in West Roxbury and was a graduate of Boston Latin High School. Mr. Niland enlisted in the US Marine Corps at the age of 17 and was a veteran of WWII. He served in Okinawa and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. Upon discharge, he continued his education at Boston University earning a Bachelors Degree in Journalism. A self-employed salesman in the Industrial Sales Industry, he was a resident of Easton for 50 years, prior to moving to Taunton eight years ago. Mr. Niland enjoyed spending winters in Bonita Springs, FL., and was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren. A disabled American Veteran, he was a member of the 6th Division Marine Corps League, an active member of the Grid Iron Club in Easton and Boston, and had a passion for politics. He also enjoyed reading, football and listening to Jazz music. In addition to his wife Nancy, he is survived by eleven children and thirty one grandchildren.
