Son of Leonard and Alida Shoemaker Isenhour, Charles spent much of his childhood in Indiana at the home of his aunt Susan and uncle "Pete" Russell. He gave a speech at his high school graduation. Charles joined the 157th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, as a private in Company H, Angola, at the outbreak of the Spanish American War. After the war he moved back to Ontario County, New York. He married Mabel Pruner from Penn Yan, NY. They lived across from the Methodist Church in Aloquin and were active members of the church. Charles farmed and operated a seed and fertilizer distribution business from his home and a warehouse on a railroad siding a little west of Aloquin. Always proud of his service he kept a company photograph above his business desk, attended reunions, and often recited the regiment song "Marching Through Georgia, 1898." He was a cheerful and optimistic man who worked to help his fellow farmers through the Great Depression. His full name was Charles Henry Newman Isenhour, taking into account his great grandmother's and grandmother's maiden names. He was known to use Charles H., Charles N., Charles Henry Newman, and various other combinations.
