My Grandmother~aka Granny
Gertrude Copeland Bassett was a kind, loving, and very strong woman, she didn't have a mean bone in her body and I never heard her speak ill of anyone. She loved her family and was a loyal friend.
She survived the Spanish Flu Epidemic of 1918 while living in Shawnee, OK. I remember her telling the story of how her parents would not let her see the news paper, and kept the heavy drapes in her bedroom closed, but she could hear the wagons going down the brick streets filled with the dead day and night, and was bedridden for two weeks. Also while living in Shawnee as a young woman she played the piano at the theater for the silent movies, pretty cool.
Gertrude married Comer Hudson Bassett June 4, 1920 in Oklahoma City, OK., they met while working for the Oklahoma City Trolly Co., for him, it was love at first sight. They had two beautiful children and over 19 happy years together.
Later in life she worked at the Ben Milam Hotel in downtown Houston, TX. in the Cigar & News Stand inside the hotel, she loved her job, and never met a stranger. One night in the late 1950's a stray dog came to her door cold and hungry, she took him in, named him Rusty, and had him 12 years.
She loved Irises, custard pie, and was always content with what she had. I loved her smile and her laugh! My Granny was a positive person who always tried to find the good in everyone, a glass half full kind of gal.
