Adonis' Show Gave Ladies a Good Time
He was a showman, and as such, showed a lot of himself. The ladies loved it.
Robert Stephen Bass, who as "Peter Adonis" was known to many screaming women at his "Ladies Night Out" show, died June 25 at Presbyterian Hospital, at age 53.
Steve graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1970. Son of Carson Bass, Matthews' former Chief of Police. Steve graduated from Central Piedmont Community College in 1972 with a computer operations degree. He later became shop manager for Bass & Morton Heating & Air Conditioning in Monroe.
His claim to fame, however, had nothing to do with ductwork fabrication nor crashed computers but it did concern women's right. Well...sort of.
Steve's show gave women a long-unchallenged male right to view strippers. And the gals were grateful. Were they ever.
When the master of ceremonies asked the female audience if they wanted to party, they screamed, "Hell yeah". And the bumps and grinds were on.

Steve made sure his show was not only entertaining but in good taste as well. Even his mother, the late Billie Bass gave her approval. "My mother saw him on stage and was very proud of him," said his sister Toni Manley. Even so, he was picketed in 1982 by the Moral Majority in Florence, S.C.
Once an overly enthusiastic woman brough nail scissors and clipped a G-string. After that initial embarrassment, Steve's dancers wore and extra flesh-colored G-string under their show ones.
For something that started off as a joke, Toni said, it was a success that astounded them all. "He originally did it as a joke for a friend's girlfriend. He did a striptease down to some silly boxers. It was such a hit that somebody asked him to do another birthday party the next week.
"He and two close friends put together a little show and preformed at a local nightclub a couple of times. The reception was phenomenal, it just grew and grew beyond that. He was on the Sally Jesse Raphael show, on Donahoue and in Playgirl magazine. About 3,000 women came to one Charlotte club - some dressed to the nines - to see the troupe's dancers. Steve's expanded show featured preformers named "Lord Jim", "Sugie Bear", "Coffee" and the "Midnight Special."
Steve especially enjoyed the older, conserative women who came. "It was not in poor taste" said Toni. "It wasn't just stripping, but jokes, skits, and comedy routines. He travelled the East Coast and Canada.
"It's a release, a freedom for the women," he once told the Observer. "It's gratifiyng for me to see them be able to cut loose and enjoy themselves."
* Good-Hearted and caring *
Steve was more than Peter Adonis. He was a caing husband to York Anne, a caring brother to Toni, and a caring uncle, friend, and coworker. Nephew David Bass, owner of Bass & Morton said "He was easygoing, always kind-hearted, always somebody you enjoy being around. When we were in school he was real popular at dances."
David's wife, Jody, agreed. "He had the biggest heart in the world, a gentle man and full of life. He would do anything for anybody in any way to help them out. He enjoyed life and he loved dancing. Oh my goodness how he loved dancing."
Looks like Steve had the best of both world's didn't he?

He was a 1970 graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and a 1972 graduate of Central Piedmont Community College with a degree in Computer Operations. He was associated with Bass & Morton Heating & Air Conditioning in Monroe, NC.
In 1979 he formed the traveling entertainment group known as "Ladies Night Out" and used the stage name of "Peter Adonis".
A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 30, 1995 at 7:00 pm. at Eastwood Forest Baptist Church with the Reverned Roger Burrows officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 6:00 - 7:00 pm.
Survivors include his wife York Anne Bass; sister Toni Manley and her husband Robert of Climax, NC.; neice Morgan Blakely of Ft. Lauderdale, Fl.; and nephews Wesley and Mitchel Blakely of Climax, N.C.
